Research

In three of every five years, low temperatures eliminate or reduce fruit crops in Missouri. In response to this, Dr. Warmund conducts research on low temperature stress of horticultural crops. Her research program on apple and peach rootstocks serves the Missouri fruit industry. Dr. Warmund's rootstock research focuses on evaluation of pome and stone fruit rootstock field performance and improvement of rootstock propagation techniques. She also works on nursery production problems affecting the release of new plant material. As State Fruit Extension Specialist she works with commercial fruit producers focused on developing and providing educational materials for fruit and nut growers to increase production efficiency and thereby increase profitability. She also is involved in establishing and maintaining demonstration research plots to illustrate innovations in the fruit and nut industry. Dr. Warmund is contributing her pomological expertise as a collaborator on the UMCA chestnut and black walnut research program. Currently, her chestnut research projects include the development of primary and secondary burs and cultural practices to manage crop load, use of dwarfing rootstocks and interstems for high-density production, and graft incompatibility in Chinese chestnut. Black walnut studies focus on dwarfing rootstocks, the chilling requirements for flowering, sensory attributes of various cultivars, the seasonal development of the kernel, and the characterization of kernel necrosis and shriveling.
